Retail teams rarely lose discipline because standards were never explained!

They lose discipline when those standards are enforced selectively.

When one employee is corrected and another is excused for the same behaviour, the team quickly understands that the standard is negotiable. From that point, every instruction becomes open to interpretation.

The damage goes beyond the individual incident. Strong employees begin to question why they continue making the effort. Managers lose credibility, poor behaviour spreads, and performance becomes influenced by relationships, seniority, or convenience instead of business expectations.

Consistency does not mean managing every employee in exactly the same way. People have different strengths, experience levels, and support needs. A new employee may require more coaching than an experienced one.

But the expected outcome and level of accountability must remain clear for everyone. The same service, attendance, conduct, and performance standards cannot change according to who is involved.

Teams can accept demanding standards when they see that those standards are fair and consistently protected. What damages trust is watching leaders speak about accountability while repeatedly making exceptions.

Every exception teaches the team what the business truly accepts.
