A target tells people what the business expects. It does not teach them how to achieve it. Managers must translate the monthly number into daily actions that the team can understand and influence.
Giving a retail team a sales target does not make it commercially focused!
A target tells people what the business expects. It does not teach them how to achieve it. Managers must translate the monthly number into daily actions that the team can understand and influence. Client follow-ups, conversion, average transaction value, product recommendations, appointments, and lost sales all require regular attention.
The team must also understand which actions produce results and which activities simply keep people busy. Ten calls without a clear client objective are activity. A smaller number of relevant conversations that lead to appointments, proposals, or sales is commercial progress. This is why coaching cannot wait until the final week. Managers need to review performance regularly, identify where each person is losing opportunities, and agree on the next action while there is still time to change the result.
When performance is discussed only at month end, the opportunity to influence it has already passed.
Commercial leadership happens every day on the shop floor. The final report should confirm what has been managed throughout the month, not reveal problems when there is no time left to correct them.
