Retail decisions should not be made by people who do not spend time on the floor!
This is one of the most damaging patterns in retail. The further decisions move away from the floor, the worse they usually become. At the head office level, things often sound logical. Reporting lines are changed, extra layers are added, and store issues are interpreted through summaries, filtered opinions, or internal politics. A decision gets made quickly and pushed down as if the problem has been solved.
But the floor always tells the truth. The floor knows whether the process works, whether the team can execute it, and whether the customer is responding or pulling away. Yet in many businesses, the people closest to reality are the ones with the least influence over the final decision.
I have seen store managers weakened by interference from above, junior noise treated as insight, and emotional judgments replace operational facts. None of this builds authority. It destroys trust.
A healthy retail structure is not one where everything gets escalated upward. It is one where people on the floor are trusted to lead what they are there to lead, and where senior management knows the difference between support and disruption. If you want better decisions, get closer to the floor. Everything else is distance pretending to be control.
