Training completion is not the same as readiness to serve a customer. The manager needs to know which tasks each role will perform, what practice colleagues have had and where extra support is needed. Use the approved training plan and keep the check focused on work the person is expected and authorized to do.

Build a simple skill map for each role. Depending on the store, it may cover the customer proposition, priority product, service steps, stock lookup, payment routines, appointments, opening and closing tasks, and escalation. Link each skill to a trainer, practice slot and clear evidence such as a demonstration or observed routine.

Schedule learning across shifts. A new colleague may need a product walk and a supported customer conversation; an experienced colleague may need to practise a new system or store routine. Include time for questions and repeat practice. Protect floor coverage so training does not leave customer-facing work unowned.

Use check-backs to find gaps, not to catch people out. Ask the colleague to show or explain the task, observe where practical and record what support would help. If a requirement needs formal certification or specialist sign-off, use the authorized owner and process rather than treating a manager's observation as approval.

Before opening, review readiness by shift and role. Name a trained buddy or support contact where needed, carry unresolved skills into the roster and tell the project or people owner if a required role is not ready. Recheck after opening as real customer and trading conditions test the plan.
