Before the first customer arrives, a manager has a short window to see the store as a customer will see it and check whether the team can trade the plan. The floor walk is not a hunt for small imperfections. It is a way to catch problems that will affect the customer, the team or the day's result.
Start at the entrance and follow the route a customer is likely to take. Can they understand where to go? Is anything blocking the route? Are key areas ready? Check that displays and signs match the current direction for the store.
Next, check the product the team expects to sell today. Are priority lines and sizes on the floor? Is replenishment easy to reach? Are there gaps that need action before a customer asks for an item? Do not assume the stock report tells the whole story. Confirm the physical product.
Then check the team plan. Is each person clear about their first position and responsibility? Are appointments, breaks and handovers covered? If someone is missing, decide what changes now and tell the team who owns the adjustment.
Finally, check the basics that would interrupt trade: the till or payment process, fitting or service areas, client appointments and open customer commitments from the previous shift. Use your company's procedures for safety, cash and security checks.
End with a short action list. Fix what the store can fix now. Give each follow-up an owner and time. Escalate what sits outside your authority. Then brief the team on the one or two issues that matter most. A long list without owners is not control.
